We are growing Ginkgo biloba plants under ambient (400 ppm) and elevated CO2 levels (600, 800, and 1000 ppm).
Our experiment helps us estimate CO2 levels in fossil atmospheres using fossil Ginkgo leaves we collect from the geologic record.
The (Ginkgo) "lotus" effect
Believe it or not, the micro-sized bumps on the leaf surface (called papillae) prevent water from adhering to the leaf surface. This keeps the pores unobstructed and allows greater rates of gas exchange.
